“The perfect world is what you make it, so as long as I have my friends by my side, this world is perfect!”
— MK[src]

MK is a noodle delivery boy and the successor of the Monkey King. When MK learned that the Demon Bull King was freed from his imprisonment, he, along with Mei, Pigsy, Tang, and Sandy, went on a quest to Flower Fruit Mountain. However, when he went to Flower Fruit Mountain, the Monkey King appointed him as his successor. MK then defeated the Demon Bull King, earning the title Monkie Kid.

Sometime later, MK's power was sealed by Monkey King, who began training him. MK fought many demons, including Macaque, who tricked him and temporarily stole his powers. After the Demon Bull family freed the Lady Bone Demon from her tomb, MK helped Princess Iron Fan and Red Son free the Demon Bull King from her possession.

When the Spider Queen took control of the city and captured the Monkey King during New Year's, MK, his friends, and Red Son traveled to the Celestial Realm to gather ingredients for an antidote to the Spider Queen's venom. MK along with the Monkey King defeated Spider Queen.

Soon after New Years, Monkey King lied to MK, stating he was going on vacation, when he was really looking for a weapon to defeat the Lady Bone Demon. After an encounter with the Bone Demon, MK began doubting himself. Eventually, MK learned that the Spider Queen was being used as a pawn by Lady Bone Demon, who used her to make the bone mech. Lady Bone Demon stole MK's powers and sealed the staff in bone. MK was rescued by Monkey King, who revealed his plan to find the Samadhi Fire.

After the fire was unleashed, revealing itself to be within Mei, MK and his friends defeated the Lady Bone Demon.

With the assistance of Azure, MK and Mei successfully liberated their friends from the Scroll of Memory. Throughout the process, MK experienced visions that led him to the realization that he was a Mystic Monkey, akin yet distinct to the Monkey King. Following the destruction of the protective curse and Azure's ascension to the position of Jade Emperor, MK and his team engaged in a battle against the Brotherhood at Flower Fruit Mountain. In his Mystic Monkey form, MK confronted Azure Lion and emerged victorious.

Monkie Kid™ Heroes

Our Main Hero

When MK, or Monkie Kid™, isn’t delivering the BEST noodles in town for his friend Pigsy’s Noodle Shop, playing video games or collecting cool Monkey King keepsakes, he fights ancient demons with his friends.[17]

LEGO® Life Magazine Issue 1 2022

Resourceful and clever, Monkie Kid uses his brains, his sense of humor and the power of the Monkey King staff to defend against dangerous threats of all kinds.[18]

Our hero

Delivery boy and avid gamer. Oh, and battler of ancient demons...[19]

Personality

MK is a sociable individual who enjoys spending time with his friends and engaging in recreational activities such as playing games. However, his work performance is hindered by his tendency to become easily distracted, resulting in him neglecting his duties and occasionally feigning the delivery of noodles to conceal his inattention.[20] MK is an avid admirer of the Monkey King, claiming to have extensive knowledge of his history and background. Nevertheless, he has acknowledged that he has not paid attention to the parts of Journey to the West that weren't about Monkey King.[21]

Upon gaining the Monkey King's Golden Staff, MK seeks to become hero like the Monkey King. However, he tends lose focus on the task at hand, and can be quite impatient. He has severe arachnophobia but can overcome it when his life is at stake. MK is also a bit forgetful, often not remembering what powers he has.

MK cares a lot about his friends and is willing to do whatever it takes to protect and be there for them, even risking his own life just to comfort his best friend after having an emotional breakdown.[22] MK is caring, as he accepts and encourages the help of Red Son and Macaque, even though both were his enemies at the time.[6][23] He believes that things cannot be judged its worst qualities, and that there is perfection in imperfection. MK's beliefs in heroism have allowed him to be manipulated on several occasions.

Monkey King: “In order to have full control of your powers, you need self-confidence.
MK: “I got self-confidence!
Monkey King: “No, you're just loud.
—Monkey King and MK

MK is a bit of a jerk and he has a bit of an ego, which stems from compensating his insecurities and lack of confidence[24]. He is occasionally inconsiderate of his friends feelings.[25][26] MK has he said that he often plays dumb to lighten the mood.[27]

Monkie Kid-S2Ep5-10-58

Monkey King's absence and Lady Bone Demon's interference caused MK's insecurities to grow. He felt that the Monkey King had made a mistake and that he wasn't fit to be his successor. He hides these feelings and becomes distant from his friends in order to protect them, as he cares about his friends very deeply. He's frustrated with Monkey King's departure in Season 2, though it manifests more as self-doubt than anything else.

In Season 4, MK expresses guilt for every bad thing that has happened since he had found the Golden Staff, believing that he only makes things worse, and that everything is his fault. These anxieties were later voiced by the protective curse, upsetting MK enough to unlock his Mystic Monkey form.[13]

Abilities

Note: Italicized text indicates all of MK's former abilities.

Skillset

  • Staff proficiency - While not on the same skill level as the Monkey King, MK has shown to adept in using the Golden Staff, albeit with some difficulties such as being initially unable to control its size.
  • Vehicle intuition - MK has extraordinary skill in operating vehicles.
  • Artistry - MK is a talented artist, he enjoys drawing but struggles when depicting Tang.

Powers

I've got Monkey King powers! I think I'll be fine.
―MK [src]
  • Replication - MK has the ability to make copies of himself using strands of his hair. When he had less control over his powers some of his clones became unstable.
  • Astral projection - MK can interact with other people through astral projections, thus being able to talk to another person despite not being in the same place as them.
  • Materialization - Even without the Golden Staff, MK possesses the ability to transform various objects into something new. This is exemplified by his creation of an upgraded Monkey Mech through the utilization of stone from Flower Fruit Mountain.
  • Size alteration - MK can grow or shrink his body as well as objects.
  • Flaming Fist of Fury - After playing Monkey King's VR video game, MK was able to unlock one of Monkey King's abilities, which let him ignite his fist and throw various fire punches.
  • Shapeshifting - Like the Monkey King, MK can shapeshift into one of his 72 forms.
    • Known forms:
      • Bird
      • Eagle
      • Gorilla
      • Spider
  • Invincibility - MK was immune to any form of physical damage. Unlike most of his powers, which were removed by Lady Bone Demon de-powering him in "This is the End!" until Season 3, this power was removed by Monkey King himself in "Bad Weather" to reduce MK's power to a more manageable level.
  • Gold Vision - Gold Vision is a power that allows MK to see through demonic illusions.
  • Magic cloud - MK can generate a somersault cloud to use as transportation.
  • Giant - MK can create a gigantic avatar made out of golden energy.

Transformations

  • Mystic Monkey - In "Pitiful Creatures," upon encountering the protective curse of the Scroll of Memory and being compared to the Monkey King, MK experienced a transformation, gaining the appearance of a spiritual primate including longer hair at the sides, a dark black tail, visible ears, and a pale orange marking over his eyes. In the beginning, MK would have flickers of the transformation during moments of great stress and/or anger. In "The Emperor's Wrath," MK gave himself to his hidden power, and accessed the transformation completely. In his Mystic Monkey form, MK is far more powerful than ever was in the past, with his already immense physical attributes as the Monkey King's successor being greatly augmented even further. He also gains the ability to fly and manipulate golden Chi energy to increase the force of his already destructive attacks. MK's power in this form is immense, great enough to savagely beat the Azure Lion even when he had the Power of the Jade Emperor.

Weaknesses

  • Mortality - As a human, MK possesses a mortal body, so is highly vulnerable to any forms of injuries, sicknesses, and death.
  • Arachnophobia - Due to the appearance of an average arachnid, MK possesses an irrational fear of spiders, being incapable of concentrating whenever encountering one as it often leads to trouble for himself and others. Because of this, the Spider Demons took advantage of MK's fear for their plans, with one example being the time when MK's arachnophobia led to Spider Queen's plan to take over Megapolis during New Year's.

Behind the scenes

  • During the writing of the pilot and first season, MK's name was abbreviated as "MKid" while Monkey King was abbreviated as "MK".[31] This may be how MK's name was chosen.
  • He is considered an enigma by Ashe Jacobson, as most people don't know much about MK, such as his real name and age.[32]
  • Although he is seemingly a teenager,[29] MK's exact age is not confirmed. According to Ashe Jacobson, one reason for this was because the Monkie Kid crew wanted fans to feel like the characters could be any age.[33]
  • MK's status as a Mystic Monkey is changed between the original and Mandarin dub in Season 4. In the original, MK is said to be destined to become a Mystic Monkey seen as a demon, while in Mandarin, he is specified to be a Stone Monkey like Monkey King.
  • In Monkie Kid Almighty Game Challenge, MK is shown with several non-canon transformations, all of which are recolors of Monkey King's transformations. [34]

Trivia

  • The reason he currently goes by "MK" is because his full name is too long to say.[35]
  • MK's main outfit is heavily based off of Monkey King's classic outfit.
    • The headband references the circlet, the headphones represent his neckerchief and they both have orange tops as well as black shoes and red pants.
  • While MK's age is purposefully left ambiguous, it can be assumed he is at least 18 years old, as that is the minimum age for legal driving in China.[36]
Monkie Kid concept art Issue 69 blocks magazine page 34
  • Judging by the concept art, at one point in production, MK worked at a Monkey King themed restaurant rather than Pigsy's Noodles.
  • MK likes listening to future funk music.
  • MK, as of "Calabash", has been working at Pigsy's Noodles for at least two years.
  • Despite being described as an avid gamer, MK isn't a very good player, as his Monkey Mech technique is button-mashing and he initially skips every tutorial of Monkey King's VR video game.
Ashe jacobson pokemon cards MK
  • Storyboard director, Ashe Jacobson, has said that they view MK as using he/they pronouns.
    • MK has also, on several occasions, been drawn by storyboarder, Melanie Shin, with the transgender pride flag.[37][38]
  • MK's characterization is partially inspired by Fry from Futurama. [39]
  • According to Jacobson, MK's Pokemon team would be Team Instinct.
  • Up until "Amnesia Rules", MK was the only character to appear in every episode of the series.
  • A LEGO performer appears dressed similarly to MK in 80111 Lunar New Year Parade.
  • MK seems to have sponsored a lipstick brand.[40]
  • Tang theorizes that MK's hair flap is made of bone, and that friendship is stored in his shoulder.
  • MK was made a mascot suit character, which was seen at the 2023 LEGO designer signing in Shanghai LEGO stores.
  • MK's hyperactivity, impulsiveness, trouble focusing, and hyper-fixation on the Monkey King has lead several fans to believe he is coded as having ADHD.
  • He has a collection of DVDs of The Monkey King: The Animated Series, Monkey King Adventures comic books, as well as other miscellaneous pieces of Monkey King merchandise, including a clock and underwear.
